Affirming Black Students' Lives: What Districts Can Do

Meet Robert & Jared

Director, Educational Transformation Officer

Dr. Robert Whitman has been an educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for more than 20 years. Within his career in LAUSD, his roles have included teacher, dean of students, principal, and Community of Schools Administrator. He is currently the district’s Director, Educational Transformation Officer. Through each of these experiences, he has acquired expertise that has enabled him to become a strong advocate for underserved student populations.

Throughout his career, Dr. Whitman has maintained a philosophy of “leave it better than he found it,” an attitude that inspires him to embrace challenges and take pride in his work. As a product of public schools, he remains steadfast in his belief that all students can learn and has firsthand experience—as a student and educator—that responsive public schools empower students to recognize their immeasurable potential. His diverse experiences in education have given him the ability to synthesize information and communicate in a manner that garners strong relationships with school stakeholders and community partners. Dr. Whitman recognizes the incessant nature of school reform and upholds a reflective attitude that enables him to remain committed to the work of educating all students.

Senior Director, Black Student Achievement Plan

Dr. Jared DuPree is currently Senior Director, Black Student Achievement Plan, for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). He has also served as a principal, the K-12 mathematics coordinator for the LAUSD East region, and Administrator of Instruction for LAUSD. Dr. DuPree is also an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California in the masters program teaching mathematics pedagogy.. As a former mathematics coordinator, coach, and teacher, he also consults in the area of mathematics instruction, curriculum design, and instructional leadership. He speaks at state and national conferences regarding mathematics teacher preparation.

Dr. DuPree earned his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh, his M.A. in Educational Leadership and Administration from California State University, Northridge, and his Ed.D. in Mathematics Teacher Education from the University of Southern California.

Aims & Objectives for the Workshop:

Come learn how the Black Student Achievement Plan addresses longstanding disparities in educational outcomes and supports the academic and social-emotional needs of Black students in LAUSD. Strategies include culturally responsive curriculum and instruction as the classroom norm and partnerships with community-based organizations with proven track records of success with the Black community.
