Meet Dawn

Teacher & Author

Dawn McCuin is a passionate advocate for education in and out of the classroom. She has been an educator for thirteen years and is currently teaching fifth-grade math and science project-based learning in the San Diego area. Serving children of the community has been a lifelong mission of Dawn’s and she has taken great pleasure in showing young people how math and science are a part of their everyday lives.

Outside of the classroom, Dawn had the opportunity to write her first book during the pandemic. As a young girl, Dawn was encouraged to have a curious mind and engage in math and science by her mother. During that time, the scientific method and the engineering process were taught through hands-on DIY home improvement projects such as retiling floors and rewiring the electricity of their Compton home. Despite the exposure from her family, she remembered how rare it was to be represented in the pages of her favorite children’s books or films. She strived to ensure that black children would see themselves in the pages of her books. Little did Dawn know that as a child her mother was preparing her to write about these adventures to motivate and inspire young black children to pursue the magic of science!

Aims & Objectives for Dawn's Workshop:

Culturally Relevant Resources ensure that children receive an inspiring and accurate depiction of their most powerful selves. In this session, you will get the opportunity to explore children’s books that teach about historical African American inventors and engage children in STEM-related concepts.
